Who are we?
We are REDACT (Researching Europe, Digitalisation and Conspiracy Theories), a research project based at King’s College London. If you need to contact us about this privacy notice, please write to Clare dot Birchall at KCL dot ac dot uk.
What personal data is collected (that has not been obtained directly from individuals)?
- The categories of personal data that have been collected: Social media account / usernames.
- The source of the personal data: Publicly accessible accounts and posts on social media platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, etc).
Why do we process your personal information?
We process your personal information in order to conduct research with the aim of understanding the impact of digitalisation on the production, consumption, circulation and regulation of conspiracy theories across Europe.
What is our ‘legal basis for processing’?
Data protection legislation allows us to use your personal information in this way because it is required for our public purpose as a teaching and research institution. You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us at: Clare.birchall@kcl.ac.uk
How long do we keep your information for?
We will keep your information for the length of the REDACT research project (November 2022-November 2023). It will be stored on King’s College London’s secure Sharepoint site (only accessible to researchers on the project). Once complete, usernames will be deleted or redacted from the datasets and deposited with KCL’s Open Research Data System (KORDS) to ensure long term preservation and accessibility. KCL is committed to preserving research data for a minimum of 10 years since last use of the data.

Do we share your information with other organisations?
Your personal information may be shared with members of the REDACT research team based in other universities (University of Manchester, University of Tübingen, Slovak Academy of Sciences, University of Tartu, University of Zagreb, Singidunum University, Belgrade, Serbia, University of Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and with any partner organisations for the purpose of data processing and analysis. Data Sharing Agreements are in place for this.
Will your personal information be transferred overseas?
As stated above, your personal information in the form of username may be transferred to other universities as part of the REDACT project research.
University of Tübingen, Slovak Academy of Sciences, University of Tartu, and University of Zagreb are within the European Economic Area where the data protection rules and standards are the same as in the UK. 1 Singidunum University, Belgrade, Serbia and University of Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina are outside of the EEA and the following steps have been taken to ensure your information will continue to be adequately protected to the same standard:
- REDACT project researchers at these universities have entered into a contract incorporating standard data protection contract clauses recognised or issued in accordance with the UK data protection regime.
- King’s College London has undertaken a risk assessment, which takes into account the protections contained in that appropriate safeguard and the legal framework of the destination country (including laws governing public authority access to the data).
Will your personal information be used for automated decision-making or profiling?
Your personal information will not be used to make decisions solely by automated means (without any human involvement).
